Common paediatric surgical conditions

This course is about childhood conditions that could be corrected through surgical care. Surgical care both operative and non-operative methods of managing these conditions depending on the diagnosis. Management protocols or steps will start from assessment of the paediatric surgical patient through history taking, physical examination, conduct of relevant investigations and establishment of definitive diagnosis. Those who will require operative procedures to treat their conditions will further pass through pre-operative care/assessment to determine their fitness for the proposed surgical procedure and to prepare them adequately by ensuring that payment has been made for the proposed procedure, surgical materials and adjuncts provided as prescribed during initial assessment and planning for surgical intervention or care.

Childhood Surgical Conditions

Requirements

This course is about childhood conditions that could be corrected through surgical care. Surgical care both operative and non-operative methods of managing these conditions depending on the diagnosis. Management protocols or steps will start from assessment of the paediatric surgical patient through history taking, physical examination, conduct of relevant investigations and establishment of definitive diagnosis. Those who will require operative procedures to treat their conditions will further pass through pre-operative care/assessment to determine their fitness for the proposed surgical procedure and to prepare them adequately by ensuring that payment has been made for the proposed procedure, surgical materials and adjuncts provided as prescribed during initial assessment and planning for surgical intervention or care.

At surgery in the operating theatre, the proposed surgical procedure would be carried out as planned. Further care will involve post-operative intervention which aims to address issues bordering on occurrence of unexpected events and complications. It also includes wound care, administration of fluids, analgesics and blood products as required. Follow up continues at the paediatric surgical outpatient clinic.
